Before We Begin
Answers to some of the questions you may be carrying as you consider an underwater portrait commission.
The Experience
-
Not at all. Many of the women I photograph are not confident swimmers.
We work gradually and remain within an area suited to your comfort and ability. You will receive gentle direction throughout the session, with plenty of time above the surface between photographs. A safety assistant remains in the water with you at all times.
-
No. Beautiful portraits can be created with your face above the surface or underwater with your eyes softly closed and face turned towards the sun.
If you would like to explore full submersion or opening your eyes underwater, we will approach it gradually and entirely at your pace. You remain in control throughout the experience.
-
Your safety is considered throughout every part of the session. I am CPR certified, and a safety assistant remains in the water to help with fabric, positioning and physical support when needed.
We begin with simple movements and progress only when you feel ready. Breaks are encouraged, and you may return to the surface at any time.
-
Women’s portrait commissions may be created in the private natural setting of The Spring Studio or the calm, controlled environment of The Pool Studio.
During our planning conversation, we will choose the setting that best supports your comfort and the artwork we hope to create.
-
The natural spring remains approximately 72 degrees throughout the year.
Warm robes, towels, hot tea and private indoor and outdoor showers are available to make the transition into and out of the water comfortable.
-
Pieces with softness and movement photograph beautifully underwater. Flowing dresses, skirts and lightweight fabrics such as chiffon and tulle respond especially well to the water.
A secure swimsuit or simple supportive undergarments can be worn beneath sheer fabrics. During the planning process, I will help you select or source pieces that support your vision and feel comfortable on your body.
-
Makeup is entirely optional. If you choose to wear it, light waterproof products generally work best.
Hair can be worn naturally, loosely styled or arranged in a soft braid or bun. Structured styles and heavy hairspray will not hold underwater. Movement is part of the beauty of the finished portrait, so perfection is neither expected nor necessary.
